This department deals with various multi system connective tissue diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis – Main symptoms being pain, swelling and stiffness of small and large joints, morning stiffness, subsequently leading to destruction of joints and affecting other internal organs.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus – A multi system disease more common in females (Female to male ratio 8:1). Presents with pain and stiffness in various joints, skin lesions precipitated by exposure to sunlight, loss of hair, involvement of kidneys, brain, heart etc. This disease if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately can be fatal.
Polymositis and Dermatomyositis – This disease presents with pain, stiffness and weakness of various muscles especially proximal muscles of hands and legs resulting in significant difficulty in getting up from sitting and lying position, combing hair etc. Various other connective tissue diseases like Poly Arthritis Nodosa practically affecting almost all the organs, joints, kidneys, brain, blood vessels, heart, gallbladder, testis etc. in the body, systemic sclerosis, polymalgia rheumatic and temporal arthritis – a disease presenting with headache, pain and stiffness in shoulder, neck and hip muscles and leading on to blindness, if not diagnosed early and treated effectively and metabolic like Gout – due to high uric acid in the blood and diseases like psortiatic arthritis are dealt with by this department.
