THE MONSTER IN THE BABY’S BELLY
We are proud of We are proud of outstanding feats achieved by mankind like climbing the top of Mount Everest or exploring the moon. Today we bring forth an outstanding feat in medical science achieved by doctors in Lakeshore Hospital. 2 year old Maria Antony was enjoying her days with her parents, elder brother and toys. But the story was not to be so. 3 months ago her mother felt a swelling in her abdomen that started growing rapidly. Along with Maria was losing her appetite and was unable to take food adequately. Her parents were distressed and wanted to do everything to make her comfortable. They consulted medical experts and after some investigations a kidney tumor was diagnosed. Unfortunately by this time the tumor was extremely large with tumor extending up to her heart. She was managed at different expert centres and received chemotherapy. But the chemotherapy was not effective and the doctors told her that there was nothing else to offer. The parents were in extreme distress and perplexed. Finally they decided to come to Lakeshore Hospital. The baby was seen by a team of doctors-Urology Department led by Dr.George.P.Abraham, Cardiothoracic Surgery Department led by Dr.Musa, Radiology Department led by Dr.Rajesh and Anaesthesiology Department. A combined treatment plan was decided. The child underwent angioembolisation on 25.05.2010. This was followed by open surgery on 26.05.10 by Dr.George.P.Abraham, Dr.Musa and team. The whole tumor was removed and then the tumor extension was removed from the heart. The tumor measured 25 x 23 centimeters and weighed 3 kg and was one-third the baby’s weight. The baby has recovered well. Such a mammoth and extensive tumor has not been mentioned in this age group anywhere in the world. Yet it was successfully managed and completely removed at Lakeshore Hospital. This work is commendable and it deserves mention in local, national and international arena. We members of Lakeshore congratulate the whole team for their outstanding work and bringing back bay Maria back to life.
