VPS Lakeshore introduces Orthokine therapy in Kerala for treating joint diseases
03
Feb

Kochi: Taking the lead, VPS Lakeshore Hospital introduced Orthokine, a modern method used for the treatment joint diseases and discogenic back pain, in Kerala and successfully applied it in many patients in the first month of its introduction. Orthokine therapy is used for treating osteoarthritis, degenerative changes of the joints and chronic aseptic inflammation and occupational diseases, related to excessive load on the musculoskeletal system, including athletes and those engaged in strenuous physical activity. It is one of many unique interventions for osteoarthritis treatment. Orthokine therapy was developed in the 1990s by Professor Peter Wehling in Dusseldorf, Germany for the treatment of orthopedic diseases. According to doctors, the treatment involves induction of a biological antagonist Interleukin-1-receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) by injection, which is isolated from the patient’s blood plasma. The anti-inflammatory protective protein is injected into the painful area, which helps to ease joint pain and reduce inflammation of damaged tissue. The efficacy and safety of Orthokine therapy were proven in numerous clinical studies. In Germany alone, over 20,000 patients were treated by using this method. The advantages of Orthokine therapy compared with other types of treatments are its fewer side effects, halts chronic inflammatory process and has a long duration of action, helps to restore mobility and increase the range of motion in the joints and highly effective in 75 per cent of patients, particularly osteoarthritis of the knee and hip joints.
